Spring/Summer 2016-17 Eyewear Trends

A way to show your sense of style is adding accessories to complement your wardrobe. Hats, belts, jewelry, sunglasses are the perfect touch to personalize your look. In fact, the eyewear industry in the United States is rapidly growing with a 5.4% increase in the sales of lenses, a total of $12,622.3 million in 2015.

Recently the latest eyewear trends were presented during The 30th International Vision Expo & Conference held at the Javitz Center in New York City on April 14th-17th, 2016. It showcased the newest products, technology, trends, and education programs related to the blooming eyewear industry.

Marchon Eyewear previewed its Nike Vision Spring 2016 collection with new materials and vision technology. Including their new brands Etro, Marni and MCM which presented also new collections with classic elements of timeless luxury.

From the Safely Group,  Givenchy’s new Spring/Summer 2016 eyewear collection was showcased with the iconic detailing that identifies the brand. Fendi with a new interpretation of the frame within a frame concept and the contrast between the round lenses and the cat eye shape. Gucci presented the new designs from their runway shows. Jimmy Choo featured jeweled ornamentation and exotic leather inlays with glitter. Dior’s offered a graphic reinterpretation of their classic shape and Polaroid also launched a unisex polarized sunglasses collection for adults and kids.

Luxottica unveiled the Ray-Ban Spring/Summer collection with acetate brows, coined metal rims, and bridges. Oakley presented Prizm technology, the lightest performance sunglasses they’ve ever created.

Liberty Sport launched Helmet Spex, designed to be the best fitting frame for sports that require a helmet, with the world’s first magnetic interchange sun system to let users quickly swap in the lens for changing activities and light. Green Eyewear also launched its new custom collection requiring less water and less electrical energy to produce compared to other frames.

Celebrities also presented during The Vision Expo, Victoria Beckham attended for the first time to launch for the US market its new eyewear collection designed and developed in London, produced independently by hand in Italy. Shaquille O’Neal also launched his eyewear collection in collaboration with Zylowear and Carlos Santana in collaboration with Inspects launched his new sunglasses and ophthalmic frames.

A deep trend analysis Spring/Summer 2017 was also presented by Ali Lind from Stylesight-WGSN for The Vision Council with the following conclusion in terms of style, colors, and materials:

  • Women: Soft Angular, double bridge, texture aquatic iridescence, defining lines.
  • Men: Ombre effects, bigger square frame, aquatic iridescence, minimalist lines.
  • Colors: Paradiso, yellow gold, gray, citrus, green, bold blues, whiskey brown, green and white.
  • Materials: Crystal-clear, matte metal, fine metal, iridescence lens, frosted classic tortoiseshell, mixed materials, embedded wire, embellishments, sustainable eyewear.
  • Key Shapes: Square frames, angular, the aviator, round, 980’s, shield, brow focus, the new feline, semi-rimless, contrast temples, zero base lens.
